Wheel Balancing

What The Balancing Process Entails

When a tyre is fitted onto a rim it is impossible to have perfectly even weight distribution. Even 10 gram unevenness in the weight distribution can cause some discernible vibrations as you drive the car.

There are a couple of different forms of vibration that can be felt here, including horizontal or side-to-side and vertical vibrations. In most cases, both types of vibration are present. This is where the balancing process comes into play. During the balancing process, mechanics will apply counter-weights to achieve something close to perfect weight distribution. This allows you to enjoy a perfectly smooth, vibration-free ride.

Some Causes For Balancing To Go Out

The tyres are the part of your car that make direct contact with the road, so

  • Hitting potholes or driving over big object lying on the road
  • Taking a sharp turn over or against a curb can put stress on your tyres
  • Wear and tear affects your tyres over time and causes them to become unbalanced

What Else Causes Vibrations

It is important to note that even if your tyres are perfectly balanced, you may still experience some vibrations. Some possible reasons include:

  • Bent wheels
  • Flat spots on the tyre caused by very hard braking
  • Wheel-to-axle mounting errors
  • Brake or brake disk wear or failure
  • Suspension wear or failure
  • Wheels not aligned
  • Wheel bearing wear or failure

Benefits Of A Balanced Tyre

  • Proper wheel balancing ensures a shake-free ride, optimum tyre tread wear, and long-lasting suspension and steering components.
  • It also helps reduce treadwear.
  • Balancing the tyres helps prevent premature wear, meaning you’ll get more out of your tyres than you would otherwise.
  • Reduce fuel consumption.

If You Don’t Balance The Tyre

  • Unbalanced wheels will affect your car in ways that may end up costing you a lot more than the cost of balancing it.
  • Your tyres will wear down prematurely and you may be in for some not-so-good vibrations.
  • Even a 10 gram imbalance can put uneven pressure on the treads, causing uneven tread wear and excess heat that shorten the life of the tyre.
  • Impaired tyre traction and steering control.
  • Increased fuel consumption.

Wheel Alignment

What Is Alignment

Alignment refers to adjustment made to a vehicle’s suspension as per the motor vehicle’s manufactures specifications. The suspension is the system that connects a vehicle to its wheels. It is not an adjustment of the tyres or wheels themselves, rather it is the adjustments done to the specific components of the suspension. The key to proper alignment is adjusting the angles of the tyres which affect how they make contact with the road.

Symptoms

Here are some common signs that you need to do wheel alignment

  • Vehicle pulling to the left or right.
  • Uneven or rapid tyre wear.
  • Your steering wheel is crooked when driving straight.
  • Squealing tyres.
  • Increased fuel consumption.
  • Poor road handling

Causes

  • Sudden jarring or heavy impact caused by hitting something, such as a pothole, or bumping a curb.
  • A road accident.
  • Worn parts caused by wear and tear.
  • Over time, parts such as ball joints, rack ends, suspension springs can become worn and slack, leading to a shift in the wheel alignment.

Dangers

Bad wheel alignment can be dangerous because it may cause your car to pull or drift out of your lane or hydroplane on wet roads. It could also cause you lose traction in an emergency. It causes erratic road handling, making the car hard to control even under normal driving conditions.

Benefits Of Doing Wheel Alignment

  • Increase Fuel Efficiency.
  • Reduce Expensive suspension repairs.
  • Experience Smoother Driving.
  • Improve Vehicle Safety.
  • Increase the Life of Your Tyres.
  • Better road handling.

How Often

It is necessary to get your wheels aligned periodically. Most car manufactures and experts recommend scheduling an alignment every 10 000 to 15 000km, depending on the road conditions. If you experience any of the symptoms before the prescribed time, it is highly recommended to do alignment immediately.

DON’T WAIT, YOUR TYRES WILL THANK YOU

Tyre Rotation

Tyre rotation is perhaps the most neglected or not even considered when it comes to tyre care and maintenance.

So, what is tyre rotation? Simply put; it entails swapping the front and back tyres to even out the wear. By design, the weight of front and rear axles differs which results in uneven distribution of load on the wheels. Depending on the specifics of the vehicle, tyre rotation may be recommended every 10,000 km. A general rule of tyre rotation is determined by the type of drive-train viz. rear wheel drive, front wheel drive or 4×4.

As a rule of thumb; it is always a good idea to rotate your tyres when you do wheel balancing.

Suspension Diagnosis

Listen to your Vehicle Suspension; it may be trying to tell you something…..

If you car starts to shudder, knock or creak or perhaps it starts feeling bumpy, pulls to one side or the momentum makes your car nose dive, lean back, or roll; it is time for a suspension check.

For a minimal charge we will check over fifty different suspension components and give you a report. Replacing the faulty suspension components could save you a lot of money in costly repairs later on, not to mention the cost of replacing your tyres as your alignment will more than like also be out as a result of the badly worn suspension components.

Puncture Repairs

Repair of any punctures in the shoulder and sidewall areas are not advisable or permitted.

If a tyre has been punctured in the tread area by a nail or other sharp object less than approximately .7mm in diameter and if no internal damage is found, the puncture can usually be safely repaired.
